Liam Davies walked back into town in and told people he was Maggie Sullivan's husband. The reunion landed with force in episodes 1 and 2, because Maggie had believed that chapter was over after a whirlwind romance in Europe, a sudden disappearance and an annulment she thought had ended the marriage for good.

It had not. The annulment papers never went through, which left Maggie Sullivan and Liam Davies still legally married even after they agreed to move toward a divorce. Liam stayed at the Crossing while that process was being worked out, turning what looked like a closed book into a live wire for Maggie, who is already with Cal Jones. The setup gave season 4 an immediate hook: a woman trying to move forward found out the past was still legally in the room with her.

Episode 1 gave that problem a very physical edge when Liam got his foot trapped in a bear trap, sending Maggie into a panic. She treated his injury herself after he refused to go to the hospital for stitches, then told him bluntly that she wanted the divorce so she would never have to see him again. That is not the kind of line a person says when the emotions are settled.

Episode 2 pushed the story deeper. Maggie went to Liam's cabin to clear the air and found him shirtless, hanging clothes on a line, with scars running across his back. The sight complicated the picture she had been trying to keep simple. She had once told Sydney Shandon that the silver lining of the breakup was that it meant she would never have met Cal without it, but season 4 has made it plain that Liam was never just a summer fling, despite what Maggie had previously told Lola Gunderson. A steamy dream about Liam in episode 1 only underscored how unfinished the feelings around him still are.

That is what makes the storyline work now. Maggie is no longer dealing only with an ex who came back late; she is dealing with a marriage that survived on paperwork, a new relationship with Cal and a past that keeps forcing its way into the present. With the divorce still being finalized, Sullivan's Crossing - Season 4 has answered the question it raised at the start: Liam is not a memory, and Maggie cannot treat him like one until the legal tie is finally cut.
