PEOPLE has released an exclusive clip from the Sullivan's Crossing season 4 premiere, and it opens on the kind of moment that can send a relationship off course before the day has even started. ’s is in bed beside , telling him, “I never thought I would see you again,” before he answers, “And I’m so sorry,” and adds, “If I could change what happened, I would.”

The exchange quickly turns more personal. Maggie says, “I’m with now,” but Liam keeps pushing, telling her, “Just give me another chance, Red,” before they kiss. Then the scene snaps back to reality: Maggie wakes up to Cal standing beside her bed with coffee in hand, telling her, “Hey, brought you some coffee,” and later, “Sounded like you had a pretty good dream.”

That is the engine of the new season. The premiere episode, titled “,” picks up after Liam’s shocking arrival in the season 3 finale, and his return throws Maggie’s renewed commitment to Cal into question. In the clip, Cal presses for details, and Maggie brushes him off by saying she is running late. When he tells her, “You were up pretty late. I didn’t think it would hurt to let you sleep in a little,” she pushes back, saying she does not want things to “slide around here” and that she has been feeling “overwhelmed” by everything.

Cal’s patience is wearing thin, too. He tells Maggie, “He’s not the only one full of surprises lately,” then lands the line that makes the gap between them plain: “I just thought you’d mention being married before.” That confrontation matters because the season is built around Maggie trying to balance her career, her relationships and the unresolved feelings stirred up by Liam’s unexpected return.

The clip also signals that Maggie will not let Liam’s reappearance stay unresolved for long. In “Curveballs,” she begins digging into the real reason for his return, while Cal struggles with growing jealousy. Elsewhere across the Crossing, tensions rise as relationships are tested and new challenges emerge. The unanswered question is no longer whether Liam will affect Maggie’s life; the premiere makes clear that he already has, and the fallout is now landing on everyone closest to her.
