Kohan said she connects to that feeling in her own way, even if her life looks very different from Maggie’s. “I’m obviously not a brain surgeon and I’m not estranged from my father by any means, but you have to find different versions of yourself that you can connect to,” she said, adding that coming back to a place can trigger memories through “the smell of something” or “a certain song” that sends you “right back into that space.”
She said that return can unsettle the version of yourself that was built elsewhere. “It’s just a flood of emotions and memories and that version of yourself back in the city crumbles just a little bit,” Kohan said. The comment fits a character who is being pulled between who she was in Boston and who she may become in Timberlake, with the season set to lean on both romance and family conflict.
The show centers on Maggie’s romantic and family relationships in the Nova Scotia town, and Kohan has also spoken about the value of female friendship in that world. “You can have your romantic relationships and those are incredibly important too, but to be seen by other girlfriends or other women in your life, it’s a different kind of bond,” she said.
