Dwyane Wade said Gabrielle Union was the star when the couple arrived at the 2026 Met Gala in New York City on May 4, and he made clear he saw his role as standing back. Asked about the night by E! and Live From E!: Met Gala 2026, Wade said it was his job to never be in Union’s way and to compliment her, then get out of the way.
Union, 53, wore a brown, sheer Michael Kors gown she said featured 170,000 crystals and took 500 man hours to complete. She finished the look with a diamond Tiffany & Co. necklace. Wade, 44, wore black pants, a black sheer shirt, a tuxedo-style vest and Tiffany & Co. jewels as the pair returned to one of fashion’s biggest stages.
This year’s gala carried the Costume Art theme and the dress code Fashion Is Art, with Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour serving as co-chairs. The couple, married since 2014, has made the Met Gala part of its public style story, and this appearance followed their 2025 turn on the carpet, when Union’s look and Wade’s tailoring also drew attention.
That history matters because the 2026 appearance fit a pattern the couple has already established: Wade playing the supportive partner, Union commanding the room. In 2025, their daughter Zaya Wade, now 18, watched from the sidelines and reacted in an Instagram Story with a string of approving one-liners, including, “Alright, show up and show out!” and “I approve, I approve, I approve,” a sign of how closely the family’s Met Gala moments are followed.
For Wade, the message this time was plain. Union was the focus, and he seemed content to let the carpet belong to her.
