Donnie Wahlberg says the door is still open for Tom Selleck to show up in Boston Blue, the new spin-off carrying on Danny Reagan's story after Blue Bloods ended in December 2024. Wahlberg said he spoke to Selleck the minute he was deciding whether to take the role, and that the longtime Frank Reagan actor has been supportive of the new series.
Wahlberg did not spell out what they discussed, but he said he would love to see Selleck come up to Boston or have Danny head back to New York to visit Frank. He also said Selleck will make his own call based on the work and the material, and that he would welcome the chance to work with him again.
The comments, made in October 2025, come as Boston Blue settles into the same Friday night slot once held by the original drama. The new series was ordered just two months after Blue Bloods ended its 293-episode run, a quick handoff that kept the Reagan family universe on television even as the flagship show was canceled in 2024.
Selleck has not committed to appearing in Boston Blue, even in a one-off role. In November 2025, he said he did not know whether he would do the show and said it was not his lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan. He also called the end of Blue Bloods a huge disappointment, while noting that the cast got along well and that such an atmosphere was rare. His comments underscored the split reality around the franchise: the new series is moving ahead, but the man most closely tied to the original remains unconvinced that Frank should return.
Wahlberg said the end of Blue Bloods was very difficult for the cast and that their offscreen bond made the cancellation hit harder. He said the team is still looking for ways to bring in other Reagan family members, suggesting the show is built to keep one foot in the old world even as it moves forward. For now, the answer to whether Selleck will return is simple: not yet, and only if the material gives him a reason.
