says has been supportive of , but the former star still has not signed on to appear in the spin-off, even for a single episode. The new series premiered in October 2025 and carries ’s story forward after Blue Bloods was canceled in 2024.

Wahlberg said he spoke to Selleck the minute he was deciding whether Boston Blue was a project he wanted to do, but he could not share the details of their talks. In an interview with in October 2025, he said he would love for Selleck to come up to Boston or for Danny to go to New York to visit Frank, and added that Selleck would always base any decision on the work and the material. He also said the team is looking for ways to bring other Reagan family members into the series.

That matters because Boston Blue is not starting from zero. It inherited Blue Bloods’ Friday night slot and arrived two months after Blue Bloods ended its 293-episode run with a December 2024 finale. The new series is being sold as a continuation of a show that spent years anchored by Tom Selleck’s , and any appearance by Selleck would carry real weight for viewers who followed that family from the start.

The catch is that Selleck has not been talking like a man ready to step back into the role. In a November 2025 interview with Hour Detroit, he said he did not know whether he would do Boston Blue and called it another show. He said he did not think it was his lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan, though he also said the end of Blue Bloods was a huge disappointment. The contrast is clear: Wahlberg wants the door open, but Selleck is treating Frank’s chapter as closed unless the writing gives him a reason to walk back through it. Wahlberg put it plainly when he said he would love to work with him again and hoped the right idea would one day move Selleck to join in.

For now, that is the answer Boston Blue has left hanging over it. The spin-off has Danny, the time slot and the legacy, but not yet the man whose presence helped define the original family drama.
