Hailey Bieber says she does not call the paparazzi on herself, pushing back in an Interview Magazine piece published April 14 against an online rumor that has followed her for years. “I don’t think it’s something that anybody asks for,” the 29-year-old said of being hounded by cameras. “The spirit behind it is very dark and I don’t think it’s something that anybody asks for in this world.”
She added that it still bothers her to see posts claiming, “She calls the paparazzi on herself every day.” “It’s so icky,” Bieber said, adding that “historically we’ve seen that paparazzi are awful” and that she does not think the culture has “gotten any better or any worse.”
The remarks land at a moment when Bieber is already being watched closely online. On April 13, she posted about Coachella weekend one, calling it “Such a special weekend,” after Justin Bieber headlined the festival on April 11. In the post, she wrote, “Nobody will ever know even an ounce of what it’s taken to get here,” before adding that she was “so grateful for this beautiful life” and “SO proud. let’s do it all again!!!!”
Bieber’s comments also fit with the way she says photography shapes how she dresses. She said being photographed when she leaves the house makes her think about style in different ways, and that she is more conscious of how clothes read on red carpets. She said she has worn outfits that looked good in person but photographed awkwardly, which makes her pay closer attention to what ends up in pictures.
That same instinct shows up at home with Jack Blues Bieber, her 19-month-old son.
