Brian Cox has joined the Season 2 cast of Dexter: Resurrection, and he will play a series regular known as The New York Ripper. The character is a serial killer who terrorized the city years ago, is no longer active, and still taunts the survivors of his long-ago murder spree.
The casting gives the show a new source of menace just as the story moves beyond its first season’s revelations. Cox enters a series that left Dexter Morgan with a hard-won answer in the finale, after he found a folder belonging to Leon Prater marked with the name Don Frampt, New York Ripper, among the leads he had tucked into a duffel bag.
That discovery came after Season 1 spent weeks following Dexter after he took a bullet to the chest from his own son. He woke from a coma to find Harrison gone without a trace, then set out for New York City to find him and make things right, while Angel Batista arrived with questions and the season also included Uma Thurman, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa, Emilia Suárez and James Remar. Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten Ritter, Eric Stonestreet and David Dastmalchian also guest-starred.

Season 1 had already been building toward the New York Ripper identity before resolving it in the finale, and Season 2 is now keeping its log line under wraps. Dexter: Resurrection is produced by Paramount Television Studios and Counterpart Studios, and the next chapter is being set up with Cox in a role that keeps the past alive rather than burying it.

Cox’s move arrives with another date on his calendar: his feature directorial debut Glenrothan is due in theaters across the UK and Ireland on April 17th. For Dexter: Resurrection, though, the point is simpler and sharper.
