Melanie Lynskey is coming back to Matlock before Season 2 wraps, and CBS has already shown the first photo of her return as Debra Palmer. Her episode airs Thursday, April 16, landing one week before the show’s two-part finale on Thursday, April 23 at 9/8c.
That puts Debra squarely in the final stretch of matlock - season 2, where every meeting carries more weight than the last. CBS confirmed Lynskey’s episode will arrive as the penultimate installment of the season, while there will be no new episode of Elsbeth on April 23.
Lynskey first appeared as Debra Palmer in Season 2 Episode 4, which aired Thursday, October 30, 2025. Debra was introduced as a former lover of Senior’s, and her history ties directly to one of the season’s most sensitive threads: the Australia trip during which Senior told Julian to bury the Welbrexa study. Matty and Olympia hoped then to convince Debra to testify against Senior, which made her one of the few people who could disrupt the story Senior wanted to control.

Her return also comes after the show has spent part of the season widening its focus beyond the central investigation. In “Piece of My Heart,” Olympia and the team handled a wrongful death case while Matty reflected on her relationship with her daughter Ellie, and Ellie appeared in flashbacks to when she was pregnant with Alfie. Against that backdrop, Debra’s reappearance brings the plot back toward the money trail and the people who can still move it.
The setup for Episode 14 points in the same direction. Its logline says the team continues tracing Senior’s money trail and arranges a delicate meeting with a key accomplice, one that could expose them all. It also says the team takes on a criminal justice student’s personal case involving a hit and run, giving the hour both a legal and personal pressure point as the season heads into its finish.

Ritter previously called Lynskey’s appearance on the show “inevitable,” and Lynskey said it was mostly a matter of story and scheduling. She also said she wanted a scene with Bates, then joked, “Sure, him too.” That exchange made clear the return was not a question of whether Debra would come back, but when the schedule would let the story get there.
Now the answer is set. Lynskey returns on April 16, the finale follows on April 23, and Debra’s reappearance looks built to push Matlock into its endgame with one more person from Senior’s past back in play.
