Jon Bernthal is heading back to television next month as The Punisher, giving the walking dead franchise one of its best-known names yet again while Marvel brings Frank Castle back to the screen on May 5. Marvel Studios confirmed in March that Bernthal’s version of the character will headline The Punisher: One Last Kill, a long-awaited Disney Plus Special Presentation.
The move puts Bernthal in one of his two appearances as Frank Castle this year and extends a run that has already made him central to the character’s modern life. He first played Castle four years ago in Daredevil: Born Again, then reprised the role last year in the first season of the same series. The new special will be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe Special Presentation since 2022.
That matters because Bernthal is not just another familiar face crossing through the franchise. He is a Walking Dead legend, and his return adds another chapter to a saga that has already stretched more than a decade. The broader walking dead universe has kept moving through spinoffs after the original show ended, with stars from the series and from outside it continuing to show up. Stephen Merchant appeared in Daryl Dixon, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan remains part of the franchise through Dead City.

For Marvel, the timing is the point. Fans have been waiting to see Bernthal back on TV screens, and the May 5 release gives them that chance next month. It also marks a rare revival for the Special Presentation format, which has been dormant since 2022 and now returns with one of the character’s most recognizable actors front and center.

The franchise has survived by making itself feel both familiar and alive, and Bernthal’s return fits that pattern neatly. The question was never whether Frank Castle could come back. Marvel has now answered it: he is back, and he is coming back soon.
