Karen Fukuhara says the cast and crew of The Rookie: North will learn by the end of April or the beginning of May whether the new ABC spin-off gets a future beyond its pilot. Fukuhara recently wrapped filming in Vancouver on the project, which pairs her with Jay Ellis in a key role.
The series centers on a middle-aged man who joins the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie after a traumatic home invasion pushes him toward a new career. Fukuhara said Ellis is “at the forefront of it all” and called him “a wonderful human being,” adding that “it’s really important to have a good number one” because “everything trickles down from the number one” and shapes the mood on set.
That matters because The Rookie: North is not being developed in a vacuum. It is tied to Nathan Fillion’s The Rookie franchise, which has already seen one spin-off come and go after ABC launched The Rookie: Feds in 2022 and canceled it after one season. Nathan Fillion has led the original series since its 2018 debut on ABC, giving the franchise a built-in audience even as the network has been cautious about expanding it.

The caution is part of the story here. The Rookie: North still does not have a full-season order, so the pilot’s reception will decide whether ABC keeps building the franchise or stops at another one-off attempt. Fukuhara put the timing plainly: “We find out at the end of April, beginning of May.” For now, that leaves the show’s future riding on the same narrow window that has ended one previous chapter of the franchise already.
