Karen Fukuhara says fans of The Rookie: North will learn whether the ABC spin-off has a future by the end of April or the beginning of May, after she recently wrapped filming on the pilot in Vancouver. The project has not yet been given a full season order.
Fukuhara, who plays a key role alongside Jay Ellis, said the timing is now in the hands of the network and the team behind the pilot. “We find out at the end of April, beginning of May,” she said, adding that Ellis “is at the forefront of it all” and calling him “a wonderful human being.”
Her comments matter because ABC has already tried once before to extend the franchise and came up short. The network launched The Rookie: Feds in 2022 and canceled it after one season, leaving the future of any new offshoot under a sharper spotlight than a typical pilot. The original The Rookie, led by Nathan Fillion since its 2018 debut on ABC, remains the anchor of the franchise.

The Rookie: North follows a middle-aged man who joins the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie after a traumatic home invasion pushes him toward a new career. Janet Montgomery and Chris Sullivan also star in the pilot, which was filmed in Vancouver. For now, the new series is still waiting on the decision that will determine whether the rookie cast gets another chapter or another canceled offshoot to join the franchise's history.

That answer should arrive soon, and it will say whether ABC wants to keep building on one of its most durable procedural brands or move on after another pilot that never becomes a series.
