Robert Downey Jr. has set off another round of Marvel speculation after posting an Easter-themed image of Doctor Doom holding an egg basket on Instagram. Hidden in plain sight were two eggs bearing the logos of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, and fans immediately treated the post as a possible clue about Avengers: Doomsday.
The basket also included eggs with the logos of Captain America, Black Panther and the Fantastic Four, all of whom are appearing in the film. That left Spider-Man and Doctor Strange as the obvious outliers, especially after fans began wondering whether Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer might turn up as surprise additions. One Reddit fan wrote that a large part of the speculation around the movie centers on “the whereabouts of Strange and Spidey,” while another said the image looked like “a sanctioned promo piece,” adding that Downey “doesn't just post things randomly without permission.”
Downey’s post matters because it lands at a moment when Marvel has already made many of the film’s returns official, but not all of them. The movie marks Downey’s return to the Marvel universe as Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, and the cast list mentioned in the article does not include Spider-Man or Doctor Strange. That gap has only sharpened fan curiosity, even though there has been no word on whether either character is set to make a cameo in the film.
There is another piece of timing that keeps the conversation alive. Holland is already back as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is scheduled to hit cinemas in July, while Avengers: Doomsday is set for release on 18 December. For now, the Easter basket has done what Marvel teases often do best: it has made the unanswered part of the story louder than the confirmed one.
