The comedian said the shoot mattered to her because “this is a brand that means something, so it is a huge accomplishment to be asked to be a part of it.”
Haddish said her first thought on set was, “I have to make sure my cuckoo doesn’t come out,” before adding, “Those bathing suits were itty bitty and I just was thinking, My booty is going to eat this up.” She said, “I wanted to keep it classy,” and described the moment as one that left her in awe: “The little girl in me is in awe,” she said.
The appearance lands at a point when Haddish has spent years turning a hard childhood into a career with staying power. Born in Los Angeles and raised by her mother, who dealt with severe mental health issues, Haddish and her siblings were placed in foster care. As a teenager, she got a shot at comedy camp through a social worker, then started building a name in stand-up before landing small roles in TV and movies.
Her profile surged in 2017 with Girls Trip, the all-Black female-led comedy that raked in over $100 million dollars and turned her into a familiar face far beyond the clubs. Since then, she has kept working, releasing a memoir, appearing in movies and touring the country with stand-up, which makes the Swimsuit issue less like a stunt than another stop in a career she has kept pushing forward.
The question now is not whether Haddish belongs in the franchise. She has already answered that by showing up with the same mix of nerves, humor and control that has carried her from foster care to movie stardom.
