Hannah Harper, a 25-year-old mother of three from Bunker, Missouri, has reached the finale of American Idol after turning an original song about early motherhood and postpartum depression into the performance that put her on the map. The finale airs at 7:00 p.m. Monday night.
Harper first drew widespread attention with her audition performance of “String Cheese,” a song that left Carrie Underwood in tears and sent viewers searching for more about the singer behind it. Kalshi prediction market data in the article gave Harper a 78% chance to win the finale, ahead of Jordan McCullough at 16% and Keyla Richardson at 6%.
Her route to this point has been unusually rooted in church music and family travel. Harper began singing at 9, after her parents left traditional jobs, sold their home and took their family on the road in a tour bus to perform in churches across the country. That traveling life lasted until 2016, when the family settled in Birch Tree, Missouri. After that, Harper joined a worship team, met her husband and began posting music videos online.
An American Idol recruiter later reached out to her through social media, though Harper initially believed the message was a scam. She auditioned anyway, then advanced through Hollywood Week and the Ohana Round filmed at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii before earning a place in the finale.
What makes Harper’s run stand out is how quickly a private story became a public one. Her performances have leaned on guitar and banjo and a traditional country-bluegrass sound, giving the show a contestant with both a distinct style and a clear backstory that viewers have already embraced. Monday night will show whether that momentum ends with a title or simply confirms her as the season’s breakout name.
