Taylor Swift skipped the 2026 Met Gala, leaving one of the event’s most closely watched regulars off the carpet just as the starry night in New York was set to unfold. The absence stood out because Swift had attended six times before, including as a co-chair in 2016.
Her Met Gala run began in May 2008, when she arrived at age 18 in a golden Badgley Mischka design for the “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy” theme. She came back in May 2010 wearing an ethereal Ralph Lauren dress for “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity,” then returned in 2011 in J. Mendel and again in 2013, when she wore J. Mendel for “Punk: Chaos to Couture.” In May 2014, she wore a pink Oscar de la Renta dress, and in 2016 she co-chaired the gala in a Louis Vuitton ensemble with bleached blonde hair.
That history made the 2026 absence more noticeable, especially as the event was set to be co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Vogue’s Anna Wintour. The Met Gala has long been as much about who shows up as what they wear, and Swift’s name had become part of that annual calculation.
What lingered this year was the gap between the singer’s past role at fashion’s biggest night and her decision to sit it out. After six appearances and a decade since her last one, Swift’s omission was not a footnote. It was the story.
