Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen at Magic Kingdom on May 3, 2026, Disney said after executives and an Imagineer took a test ride in April. The attraction is coming back with a lower height requirement, dropping from 40 inches to 38 inches.
Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle, Magic Kingdom Vice President Sarah Riles and Imagineer Wyatt Winter all rode the attraction during the April test, and Vahle said the changes will let even more families experience the classic adventure together. Disney said the refurbishment includes new track, refreshed animatronics throughout the attraction and restored effects that had been dormant for years, along with new show elements and ride vehicles.
The update matters because it gives the long-running coaster a broader reach just as Disney prepares to put it back into service. The company said the lower height limit follows a comprehensive review by safety teams and improvements made during the refurbishment, which also adds a new Rainbow Caverns scene with phosphorescent pools and iridescent stalactites and stalagmites.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad continues the story of Barnabas T. Bullion, who struck gold in the Big Thunder region during America’s first major gold rush. Disney says guests who board the runaway trains will learn just how wild the wilderness can get, and the reopened ride now arrives with a clearer pitch: more riders, more effects and a sharper hand on the story the attraction has been telling for years.
For families planning a day at the park, the big thunder mountain reopening date is May 3, and that is the day the lower height requirement, the new scene work and the refreshed ride experience all go live at once.
