Mariah Carey is marking 15 years since she welcomed twins Moroccan and Monroe, a family milestone that still traces back to the spring day in 2011 when her life as a mother of two began. The singer and Nick Cannon announced the birth of the twins on April 30, 2011, with Monroe arriving first and Moroccan following shortly after.
Carey and Cannon married in 2008 after weeks of dating, meeting two years earlier at the Teen Choice Awards. Cannon later said it felt like love at first sight, and Carey said nobody else seemed to realize what they already knew: they were going to get married. In 2008, both also made clear they wanted children, with Cannon answering “Absolutely” and Carey replying “Yes” when asked about having kids.
The twins’ arrival gave that early declaration real shape. Carey shares Moroccan and Monroe with Cannon, and the family has remained publicly connected even after the pair separated in 2014 and finalized their divorce in 2016. Moroccan and Monroe have both appeared with their mother on stage, while Monroe began modeling in 2021 and took part in an OshKosh B’Gosh campaign that year.
The anniversary also lands against a broader family backdrop for Cannon, who is the father of 12 children with several women. That includes the death of his and Alyssa Scott’s son Zen, who died at five months old after a battle with brain cancer, a loss that has remained part of the story around his expanding family. For Carey, though, the focus today is narrower and more personal: a quarter-century after the pair met, the twins she welcomed in 2011 are now old enough to be building lives of their own. Moroccan gave a hint of that pride in 2024, when he posted a Mother’s Day tribute to Carey on Instagram with throwback photos and wrote that every moment with her was a precious memory. He said her love and support had guided him through tough and great times, and closed by thanking her for being his mom and his guide. Fifteen years on, the milestone answers its own question: Carey’s twins are still part of the public image around her, but the bigger story is that they are now teenagers, and the family chapter that began on April 30, 2011 has moved into a new stage.
