Ayesha Harris is moving up on The Pitt. The actor, who plays senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to series regular going into the HBO Max medical drama’s third season.
The change comes as Supriya Ganesh, who has played senior resident Dr. Samira Mohan since Season 1, will depart after Season 2. An individual with knowledge of the situation said Ganesh’s exit is a story-driven decision.
Harris appeared in four episodes out of 15 in Season 1, then returned for Season 2. Her expanded role follows a first season that landed 13 Emmy nominations and won major awards including outstanding drama series, outstanding lead actor in a drama series, outstanding guest actor in a drama series and outstanding supporting actress in a drama series.
The series is set at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, a teaching hospital where residents come in and out, which has long made turnover part of the drama. That same structure frames Mohan’s arc in Season 2, where she has spent part of the year trying to determine what the next phase of her career will be once her residency ends.
The cast change fits the logic of the show as much as the business of keeping it fresh. The Pitt has been a hit with audiences and critics, and the shift into Season 3 signals that the writers are pushing one resident forward while another moves on, exactly as life inside a teaching hospital would demand.
