Supriya Ganesh is leaving The Pitt after Season 2, and the exit is being framed by the show's creators as part of the series' hard-edged realism. Noah Wyle said Sunday night at PaleyFest in Los Angeles that cast changes are inevitable on a show set in an emergency room, where the writers have to keep the timeline believable and the ensemble moving in and out like a real hospital staff.
“It’s an inevitability that’s going to happen every season with this show because as writers we’re hard pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically,” Wyle said. He added that emergency rooms have “a high revolving door,” and said the show tries to respond by bringing in new characters or promoting from within as departures happen. He also singled out Ganesh, who plays senior resident Dr. Samira Mohan, as “a huge part of the show since the beginning,” saying, “Dr. Mohan is a beloved character, and I love playing with her and working with Supriya, and we wish her all the best in her next endeavors, and we’re going to miss her.”
The exit had already been reported on April 2 as a story-driven decision. Ganesh then added to the speculation on Saturday when she posted that she would not attend PaleyFest on Sunday, writing, “Hi everyone, not sure why it’s not removed off the site but I will not be at PaleyFest this Sunday,” and, “I know some of you bought tickets to see me and I hope you know this is not a decision I take lightly. Love you all.” By Sunday night, the panel made clear the show was moving ahead without her in the room.

R. Scott Gemmill said the approach fits the setting. He said the series wants to be as truthful as possible to how the medical profession works, and that residents come and go at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center because that is normal for a teaching hospital. Gemmill said, “It’s sort of the nature of the show. Unfortunately, the way the medical profession works, you come in, you learn, you move on, and we want to try and be as truthful to that process as possible. So we’re going to turn over our cast. But I think it’s a great launching pad for people and that’s the best we can do.”
That turnover is already shaping the next chapter. Variety also reported exclusively that Ayesha Harris was promoted to series regular going into Season 3, which is scheduled to start shooting in June. Gemmill said the new season will take place in November so colder weather can be folded into the storylines, while Dr. Mohan’s arc this season has already centered on what comes after residency ends. For Ganesh, the farewell lands now because the show is choosing authenticity over permanence, and the next rotation is already waiting.
