A man opened fire from the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacán on Monday, killing a Canadian tourist and another person before turning the gun on himself. At least six other people were injured in the shooting, which began past midday at the northern end of the archaeological complex.
Police secured a firearm, a knife and several cartridges after the attack, while the injured were taken to hospitals in the area. The Secretariat of Security of the State of Mexico said six injured people were found at the scene, including two Colombians, one Russian and one Canadian.
Claudia Sheinbaum said she had instructed security forces to investigate the events and that personnel from the Interior Ministry and the Culture Ministry were going to the site to support the victims. She also said the day’s violence in Teotihuacán caused deep pain and offered solidarity to the affected families.
The shooting unfolded at one of Mexico’s most important archaeological landmarks, a site that draws about 1.6 million tourists a year and is second only to Chichén Itzá in visitors. The Pyramid of the Moon, the second largest structure in the complex, rises 43 meters and has 47 steps, making it one of the site’s most visible monuments.
What makes Monday’s attack especially stark is that it happened in a place built for crowds, not chaos. The Canadian tourist is dead, the gunman is dead, and the remaining victims are in hospital now — leaving investigators to explain how a public monument that welcomes millions each year became the scene of a shooting in broad daylight.
