A24 has begun production on its adaptation of Elden Ring, adding nine names to the cast as filming gets underway this week in the U.K. The new additions are Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird and Peter Serafinowicz.
Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny and Nick Offerman were already attached to the film, which has a theatrical release date of March 3, 2028. Alex Garland wrote the script and is directing the production, which sources describe as A24’s most expensive and ambitious feature to date.
The budget is said to be well over $100 million, with principal photography expected to last around 100 days. That scale fits the size of the property. Elden Ring was released in 2022, has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and has collected over 400 Game of the Year awards, according to Bandai Namco.
The game’s story was built from a mythological framework by George R. R. Martin and developed by Hidetaka Miyazaki at FromSoftware. Set in the Lands Between, it is a dark fantasy role-playing game about restoring the shattered Elden Ring after war and chaos consume the realm. The film now moves from announcement to cameras, with A24 betting that the audience that turned the game into a global hit will show up again three years from now.
