said she finally joined Instagram because she needed to get ready for a new chapter and, as she put it, she could not pretend social media was never going to matter to her. The 61-year-old actress appeared at CNBC's event in New York City on Thursday and said she had been reluctant to sign up until now.

Bullock discussed the move during a conversation with CNBC's and co-CEO and co-chair , days after she made her Instagram debut on April 14 and quickly drew more than 4 million followers with a single post. Her first upload was a clip of her pointing to a blender and watching it turn on immediately, captioned, "Midnight somewhere…"

The reason for the timing was practical, and Bullock made that plain. She said she has two kids and had been quietly on social media before, mostly to learn and shop, but that she knew she needed to figure it out as she prepared for the release of Practical Magic 2 in September. "It didn’t feel like it would ever be my thing," she said, adding that she is not spontaneous and needs a plan.

That need for a plan shaped how she approached the Instagram debut. Bullock said she asked the studio to tell her what they saw so she could make herself look like an idiot and have fun, but she drew one line: no selfies and no makeup tutorials. She said she was excited to see how she could contribute and added that if it works after the film is over, maybe she will do a makeup line.

The social media rollout is tied to Practical Magic 2, which Bullock and introduced with a new teaser at in Las Vegas on April 14. On stage there, Bullock asked, "Why do we come here, Nicole?" and Kidman answered, "We come to this place for magic," before saying, "The witches are back!" Bullock replied, "Step on my line, that’s okay."

For Bullock, the Instagram debut was not a bid to reinvent herself overnight. It was a controlled step into a platform she had avoided for years, taken because the sequel is coming, the audience is already there and she decided it was time to speak in the place where people were already listening.
