Warner Bros. has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Practical Magic 2, bringing Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman back as the Owens sisters in the sequel to the 1998 romantic fantasy film. Bullock again plays Sally Owens, while Kidman returns as Gillian Owens, and the new film is set to arrive in theaters on Sept. 18.
The teaser shows Sally gardening outside the Owens home and Gillian preparing to cast a spell in the greenhouse as the family’s curse takes center stage. The story follows three generations of Owens witches trying to break a centuries-old hex that has killed every man they have ever loved, a warning that is delivered in the trailer with a blunt joke to Lee Pace’s new character: “Everyone we love dies. A really horrible death. It’s not great for the Tinder bio.”
That curse was the engine of the original Practical Magic, which centered on the Owens family and its witchcraft-linked fate. The sequel returns to the same house and repeats some of the first film’s most recognizable images, including midnight margaritas and black umbrellas. Sally’s daughters are played by Maisie Williams and Joey King, while Stockard Channing returns as Aunt Franny and Dianne Wiest returns as Aunt Bridget.
The trailer also re-creates the final shot of the first film, with Sally, Gillian and the girls opening black umbrellas and getting ready to soar through the night sky. Kidman’s Gillian says, “I’ve waited such a long time for this,” and the line lands as both a reunion and a promise: the Owens family is back, and the curse that shaped them is still at the heart of the story.
For the sequel, that is the point. Practical Magic 2 is not treating nostalgia as decoration; it is using it to pull the audience straight back into the family drama, the spellwork and the old warning that has haunted the Owens women for decades.
