Donald Trump threatened Iran with bombings if it did not open the Strait of Hormuz, posting an expletive-laden warning on April 5 that quickly spread from Truth Social to X. The message, written in the voice of a threat and punctuated with profanity, set off a rare public mockery from Iranian diplomatic missions across the world.
Iranian embassies from London to Pretoria and New Delhi to Moscow answered with sarcasm, memes and barbed jokes about Trump’s language and judgment. The Iranian embassy in Zimbabwe wrote, “We’ve lost the keys,” while South Africa’s mission replied, “Shh… the key’s under the flowerpot. Just open for friends.” In Bulgaria, the embassy posted, “Doors open for friends. Epstein’s friends need keys.”
The threat was not a one-off. Trump had already warned that Iran could be sent back to the “Stones Ages” unless it agreed to a deal to end the war, and he followed that line with a post saying Tuesday would be “Power Plant Day” and “Bridge Day” in Iran if the Strait stayed closed. Iran brushed off the language as “stupid” rather than matching it blow for blow, leaving its embassies to do the taunting online instead.

The campaign cut past the usual diplomatic caution because it aimed directly at Trump’s own style, not just U.S. policy. The Iranian embassy in South Africa urged American officials to “seriously think about the 25th amendment, Section 4,” while the broader wave of posts mocked his mental acuity and circulated satirical memes. The response also dragged in Jeffrey Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, after Trump’s critics accused him of using the war to distract from the release of millions of documents tied to Epstein.

The clash shows how quickly Trump’s online threats can become an international spectacle, and how eager Iran is to turn his own platform against him. That dynamic is likely to keep feeding the exchange as long as Trump keeps moving from threat to post and back again.
