Jill Hennessy says Law & Order was almost canceled when she joined the NBC drama in Season 4 as Assistant District Attorney Claire Kincaid. She said Dick Wolf was under pressure to add women to the cast, and that the show brought in her and S. Epatha Merkerson as two female characters.

Hennessy said the change paid off fast. Within that year, she said, the ratings went up. That mattered because the series was not yet the television institution it would become; by her account, it was still trying to find its audience when she arrived.

Her comments also put a familiar piece of TV history back in view. Merkerson went on to play Lieutenant Anita Van Buren through Season 20, while Hennessy stayed with the original series through Seasons 4-6. By 1999, NBC had ordered Special Victims Unit by Season 10 of Law & Order, and the flagship show later became the center of a larger franchise built on multiple spinoffs.

The timing gives the story its force today. Law & Order reached its 25th season in September, but a Season 26 had not yet been confirmed at the time of the source. Hennessy now appears in Hallmark+’s Hope Valley: 1874, but her recollection of the early years suggests the franchise’s longevity was never automatic. It was helped along, she said, by two women being added at the moment the series needed them most.
