Fire crews worked Monday, April 6, to contain a blaze in Panama City after tanker trucks exploded and caught fire beneath the Bridge of the Americas, sending flames and smoke up from one of the city’s major crossings. Footage released by fire officials showed crews trying to get the blaze under control while the fire burned under the span.
Bomberos Panama said the inferno began with the explosion of multiple tanker trucks and spread quickly after the first blast, triggering more explosions and a dense column of smoke that covered the area. Vehicles traveling down the road were left in the middle of the emergency as crews moved in around the burning wreckage.
The fire mattered immediately because the Bridge of the Americas is a key route in Panama City, and the Ministry of Public Works moved the same day to shut it down temporarily. The ministry said the crossing would stay closed until traffic was confirmed safe and technical results were provided to support that decision.
Officials also said specialized technical teams would inspect the bridge’s structural conditions after the fire. In its notice, the ministry said the closure was a preventive measure to protect drivers while those teams carried out the relevant technical inspection. That leaves the next step on the bridge itself: checking whether the fire below it did more than force an emergency shutdown.
