Stephen King has set off a fresh round of debate over TV history, saying in a recent social media post that The Shield mattered more to television than The Sopranos. King said The Sopranos was groundbreaking, but argued that The Shield had the stronger impact because it aired on a more widely available cable network.
King pointed to The Shield as the show that “changed TV with its main character an antihero and continuing story,” a reference to the series’ corrupt LAPD lead, Detective Vic Mackey, played by Michael Chiklis. The FX drama, created by Shawn Ryan, premiered in 2002, three years after The Sopranos debuted in 1999.
The comparison lands in familiar territory because The Sopranos is widely credited with ushering in the golden age of prestige television. Its seven-season run won 21 Emmys and helped define the modern TV drama. The Shield followed a different path but made its own mark, centering on a police officer who maintained law and order while secretly carrying out criminal acts.
That tension is why King’s remarks matter now. The debate over which series changed television more is not really about nostalgia; it is about where modern TV’s playbook came from and which show pushed viewers and networks to accept darker leads, serialized storytelling and morally compromised heroes. The Shield never reached the same level of awards recognition as The Sopranos, but Chiklis did win one Emmy for the role that made Vic Mackey one of the defining antiheroes of the era.
King’s comments do not erase The Sopranos’ place in television history. They sharpen the argument around it. For fans and critics alike, the question is no longer whether either series mattered.
