Hunter Schafer is looking back at the relationships that helped define her public life. The actor and model said in a 2024 interview on Call Her Daddy that her first-ever relationship was with a trans woman, a connection she said helped shape how she understood romance and dating as a trans person.
That history has followed Schafer as Euphoria prepares to return for its third season after four years away. She rose to fame as Jules Vaughn on the HBO series and has since added film roles in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Cuckoo, while also building a career that began on the runway for Marc Jacobs and Dior before she became a Prada ambassador.
In the interview, Schafer said her first relationship mattered because it came at a formative time. “She kind of showed me the ropes because dating as a trans person—it’s complicated,” she said, adding that she was thankful that in her first relationship and first real mutual love experience, including first sex, it was with someone who fully understood her gender. She also said dating as a trans person is complicated, and that the experience helped shape her understanding of romance.

The comments fit a pattern for Schafer, whose dating life has drawn unusual attention for years. In April 2023, she told GQ she had dated Rosalía for five months in 2019, and said they had stayed close. “It’s been so much speculation for so long,” she said of the scrutiny. “Part of us just wants to get it over with, and then another part is like, ‘It’s none of anybody’s f*cking business!'” Still, she added, “It’s something I’m happy to share,” and “And I think she feels that way too.”
Schafer also said, “I have really beautiful friendships with people that I was once romantically involved with,” before describing Rosalía as someone who remains part of her life. “She’s family no matter what,” she said. That relationship came after she was linked to model Massima Desire in 2020, and before her most public romance with Dominic Fike.

Schafer and Fike were seen holding hands in early 2022, and on February 10, 2022, he posted a photo of them kissing to his Instagram Story. One month later, they made the relationship red-carpet official at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party. Fike later said in May 2022 that the pair immediately bonded after meeting on the set of Euphoria.
For Schafer, the public record now reads less like gossip than a straight line through a career that has moved from modeling to television fame to film and fashion. The unanswered question is not who she has dated, but how much more of her private life she wants tied to a public career that is only getting bigger as Euphoria returns.
