A character model buried in the leaked Grand Theft Auto V source code has drawn fresh attention because fans think it may come from Rockstar's cancelled spy game, Agent. The model is named "player" in the files, does not appear in GTA V, and bears a striking resemblance to the protagonist from the long-dead project.

The find matters because the code itself leaked online in 2023, giving fans a chance to sift through it for scraps of unused content. That search has now turned up a model that looks somewhat like Niko from Grand Theft Auto IV, but also closely matches leaked artist screenshots of Agent from 2011, when the game was still alive inside Rockstar North.

Agent was announced for PlayStation 3 in 2009 as a stealth-action game from the Grand Theft Auto studio, but it never made it to release. Rockstar developers who spoke about it later said the project shifted through many different forms, including one version set during the Cold War, before the team decided it was not going to work out and cancelled it.

That history is what gives the latest theory weight. If the model really is tied to Agent, then Rockstar may have kept a piece of a shelved game inside GTA V for reasons that are still unclear. One view is that it was meant for a mission or side activity involving a deranged Los Santos resident who thinks he is a super spy. Another is that the image was only ever meant to appear on an in-game film or DVD poster as an Easter egg. A third, less dramatic explanation is the simplest: a bored developer was having fun.

There is still no hard proof that the model was intended for any one purpose, and that uncertainty is part of why it has caught on. Rockstar, the maker of Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Bully and Manhunt, cancelled Agent before it ever saw the light of day, but the new discovery shows how long abandoned ideas can linger inside a game’s files. For fans, the answer seems to be that the mystery model is very likely a leftover from Agent, even if the exact reason it was placed in GTA V may never be known.
