Britney Spears has checked herself into a treatment facility weeks after her DUI arrest in Ventura, California, a representative for the pop star said Sunday. Spears is due in court on May 4.
The move comes after Spears, 44, was taken into custody on March 4 when authorities saw her swerving in and out of lanes. During the arrest, authorities allegedly found an unknown substance in her car, and she is believed to have been on a cocktail of alcohol and drugs. She was released the following morning, according to arrest records from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
The representative told Page Six that Spears entered rehab voluntarily. That detail matters because it frames the decision as her own at a moment when the DUI case is still moving through the system and prosecutors are reviewing it after it was submitted to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
Spears has also had support from her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, over the past few weeks. Late last month, she shared videos with Jayden on Instagram and thanked fans for their support, writing that spending time with family and friends was such a blessing. She also posted videos from a yacht getaway with both of her sons.
Behind the public posts was a rough stretch that, according to an unnamed source, was incredibly emotional, and left Spears feeling ashamed and embarrassed. The source said she was very sorry and that it had been a very hard couple of months. Spears also spent Easter Sunday with Diane Warren and Molly Shannon, suggesting she has stayed close to a small circle while the legal process plays out.
For now, the next marker is the courtroom, not the timeline of social media posts or family visits. Spears’s decision to seek treatment on her own may help explain how she is responding to the arrest, but it does not change the fact that prosecutors are still reviewing the case and she will have to answer it on May 4.
