The Dark Winds season four finale aired Sunday and sent Joe Leaphorn and Billie out of Irene Vaggan’s bunker after the two had been abducted in the penultimate episode. In the hour titled “Ni’ Hodisxos” and “The Glittering World,” Leaphorn used quick thinking and close observation to free both of them, then arrested Vaggan as her grip on the story began to unravel.

The finish gave the season its hard edge. Leaphorn also broke apart Vaggan’s plan to have Dominic McNair cleared through false testimony, a scheme that had been driving the bunker storyline and the pressure on the people she was trying to manipulate. By the time the credits rolled, the case had turned from captivity to accountability, and the season had moved one step closer to what comes next.

That next step matters because the finale was not just about escape. It was also about loss. Gordo Sena was murdered in the episode, after telling Leaphorn earlier that he had wished he had not retired and wanted to die with his boots on. He also said he had been digging into old, unsolved cases, a detail that gives his death extra weight and leaves the inquiry around him hanging over the series.

Leaphorn’s rescue and Vaggan’s arrest land against a larger season arc that has kept the pressure on the reservation and on the people trying to hold it together. Chee’s ghost sickness was part of that larger story, and he found healing after the community turned out for his ceremony, a moment that offered relief in a season otherwise built around fear, grief and unfinished business. The finale made clear that those threads are not being closed so much as carried forward.

And that is why Sunday’s episode mattered beyond its immediate reversals. The season ended with one plot exposed, one man dead and the main characters forced to absorb what they now know. The show is already looking ahead to season five, and the final hour left the sense that the reservation’s deepest questions were not solved, only pushed into the next chapter.
