West, born in 1938 in Chelyan, West Virginia, grew up in a difficult household and spent hours practicing basketball on his own before attending . He led the school to the 1959 NCAA championship game, then was drafted in 1960 by the franchise that became the , where he spent his entire 14-year playing career.

That career made him one of the most recognizable figures in basketball history. West averaged 27 points per game, made 14 All-Star teams and earned the nickname Mr. Clutch after defining playoff moments, including a long-distance buzzer-beater in the 1970 NBA Finals that forced overtime. He also became the only player ever named NBA Finals MVP while on the losing team in 1969, before winning his only championship as a player in 1972 and retiring in 1974.

The documentary arrives with West's place in the sport already fixed well beyond scoring and trophies. He was later inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame multiple times, moved into coaching after retirement and then into the front office, where he helped build the Lakers' dominant 1980s teams and later played a key role in assembling the early 2000s roster that featured Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal. He is also closely associated with the NBA logo, which is based on his silhouette.

West died on June 12, 2024, at 86, but the film points to the part of his story that was less visible than the jumpers and championships. He was married to Martha Jane Kane from 1960 to 1976 and later to Karen Bua in 1978, and his sons went on to play basketball or work in the sport's executive ranks, extending his influence into another generation.
