Parts of the memorial that had grown along the edge of ’s property line in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills were partially removed on April 9, while police stepped up their presence in the neighborhood and an unmarked vehicle sat outside the home.

The change came after weeks in which signs, posters, trinkets and flowers had accumulated as visitors paid tribute to Guthrie, who was reported missing on February 1. By April 9, some pieces were visibly gone and the memorial had shrunk in a matter of days, turning a quiet stretch of private property into the center of a far more tense scene.

Police immediately sent a search-and-rescue team after Guthrie was reported missing, and her home was soon deemed a crime scene. The was called in after the February disappearance, but as the months passed without a public lead, the case shifted away from Tucson and drew sharper scrutiny of the and Sheriff ’ handling of it. Nanos said he personally “opened” the crime scene and later said it was “reconstituted.”

The memorial itself had become a destination. Neighbors said the traffic was growing, and a homeowners’ association meeting was called to discuss the visitors. One couple even traveled from Wisconsin just to offer a prayer for Guthrie. On April 9, vehicles were patrolling the area, and when a reporter was there, a detective told the reporter, “You need to leave this neighborhood and not come back. This is an active investigation.” Police then followed the reporter by car out of the Catalina Foothills neighborhood.

What had been a vigil on private property is now also a measure of how unsettled the neighborhood has become. The memorial’s partial removal, the heavier police presence and the warning to stay away suggest the investigation remains active, and that the public attention around Guthrie’s disappearance has only made the ground around it more fragile.
