spent years trying to outrun Screech, the character that made him famous and, his former castmates say, boxed him in long after the show ended. The new account, tied to ’s episode , says the role that ran from 1989 to 1993 followed him into failed jobs, money trouble and, eventually, a life he never fully rebuilt.

, who worked with Diamond on the set, said he believed the actor was stuck playing one version of himself. “I think that Dustin was trapped in a place where that’s all he really knew, that lovable, dorky character,” Alonzo said. “I think that was really difficult for him to find his own way.” He added that the cast was paid very low on the show and remembered talking on set with some of the other parents of the cast members.

said Diamond later “lost his house, lost everything” because he was not paying the mortgage. Block said Diamond moved to a small town in Wisconsin and, in 2022, received a residual check of $12.74 from his time on the show. Diamond had declared bankruptcy in 2001, years after Saved by the Bell became a pop-culture fixture and long before he died in 2021 at age 44 after a three-week battle with cancer.

The details help explain how a child-star image can become a trap. Alonzo said the movies and TV shows Diamond did after Saved by the Bell often had him playing the same kind of character or simply playing himself, leaving him with few chances to reset public expectations. That is the hard edge of the story: the show that made Diamond recognizable also limited how much farther he could go.

For Diamond, the answer to whether fame translated into lasting security appears to be no. The new account says he never fully escaped Screech, and the money that was still arriving years later was so small it underscored just how little the role kept giving back.
