Apple’s iPhone 20 is being described as the company’s boldest design break yet, with rumors pointing to a quad-curved display that would create an illusion of a bezel-less phone when paired with Apple’s Liquid Glass UI. The Korea Herald reports that Samsung is expected to be Apple’s only supplier for the display, a sign that the 2026 model could hinge on one of Apple’s most exacting component deals.
The timing matters because Apple is already warning about the cost pressure behind its next generation of hardware. Tim Cook has said Apple’s DRAM stockpile is running out, and that shortage could make the iPhone 20 Apple’s most expensive smartphone release to date by next year. Each 8GB LPDDR5X RAM module is estimated to cost $180, and those modules are said to account for 45 percent of the total bill of materials, a level of cost that leaves little room for Apple to absorb the difference.
The pricing comparison reaches back to 2017, when the iPhone X became Apple’s most expensive device at the time and set a new $1,000 smartphone standard. Apple was previously forced to pay between $110 and $120 for each OLED display unit for the iPhone X, and the new rumor set suggests a similar pressure point now, only with more advanced parts and a more ambitious display system. LG is also described as a key partner in Apple’s supply chain, but Samsung is said to have the resources and manpower to handle Apple’s volume and quality requirements on its own for the quad-curved screen.
That is the friction inside the story: Apple is chasing a design it has never attempted before while facing the possibility that the parts needed to make it work will be unusually expensive. The company has spent years pushing the iPhone toward thinner borders and tighter integration between hardware and software, but the rumored iPhone 20 would take that idea further and make supply chain discipline just as important as design.
