On the Artemis II mission, NASA astronauts have been photographing Earth with an apple iphone 17 Pro Max tucked into their suits. NASA's official Flickr page confirms three recent shots came from an iPhone, showing our planet through the Orion capsule's window.
The crew carried other cameras as well — GoPro Hero 11 units and Nikon D5 bodies were available — and several of the mission's most famous images so far were shot on the Nikon. Still, this new batch of photos is explicitly credited to the iPhone captures.
NASA said Apple was not formally involved in the approval process to bring phones aboard. Each astronaut was issued a silver iPhone 17 Pro Max as part of their equipment, and the pictures highlight how capable those handhelds can be in unusual conditions.
One of the iPhone photos shows astronaut Christina Koch looking out of Orion's main cabin window with the illuminated Earth below. You can follow the mission's live progress on NASA's website; later today Orion will swing toward the Moon's far side, a pass that will set a record for the farthest distance humans have traveled from Earth.
