The Martian landed on Peacock on May 1, putting Ridley Scott’s 2015 space survival film back in front of streaming viewers just as the director prepares to return to sci-fi later this year. The movie, which stars Matt Damon as Dr. Mark Watney, has already proved durable in theaters and on streaming, and its latest move gives it another round of exposure on a busy platform.
The film is not a minor catalog title. Released Oct. 2, 2015, The Martian grossed $630 million worldwide, became Scott’s highest-grossing movie to date and earned six Academy Award nominations. It also holds a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. For Peacock, the arrival brings a title with broad recognition; for Scott, it keeps one of his most successful films active as attention starts to build around his next science-fiction project.
The Martian was adapted from Andy Weir’s work and written for the screen by Drew Goddard. Its path to Peacock also reflects the way major studio films now travel between services. The movie had previously streamed on Netflix and AMC+, bouncing around since its theatrical run before landing on Peacock alongside The Day After Tomorrow, Galaxy Quest, The Mummy and Zero Dark Thirty.
That movement matters because Scott’s name is about to re-enter the sci-fi conversation. Later this year, he is set to return to the genre with The Dog Stars, which stars Josh Brolin and Jacon Elordi and is scheduled to open nationwide on Aug. 28 from 20th Century Studios. The timing gives The Martian’s new streaming home a direct link to the filmmaker’s next release, and it follows recent interest in his broader catalog, including Gladiator Ii surges on Netflix as Ridley Scott eyes a third film.
The shuffle says less about one platform’s strategy than about the staying power of a film that never really left the conversation. A decade after it hit theaters, The Martian remains one of Scott’s most bankable and most watched titles, and Peacock has picked up a movie that still arrives with a built-in audience.
