Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 episode 7 is now streaming on Disney+, and it ends with Deputy Mayor Daniel Blake dead after Buck Cashman kills him in a showdown between Wilson Fisk’s two right-hand men. The scene did not begin that way. When the episode was filmed, Cashman pointed his gun at Blake and did not pull the trigger.
That change came later, after creator Dario Scardapane decided in post-production that the survival version was not working. Scardapane said the scene had been filmed with Cashman sparing Blake and telling him to run away, but he reversed course, called Michael Gandolfini, and decided the moment needed a gunshot. The result is the bluntest turn yet in daredevil born again, because it leaves Fisk’s inner circle smaller and the conflict around Blake finished on screen rather than teased for later.
Scardapane said the version that kept Blake alive would have left him in the Fisk administration. He described it as Blake going in to resign and the interim mayor telling him, “I’m not taking your resignation. I’m going to keep you close because I don’t trust you.” In Scardapane’s view, that path “doesn’t feel like the story was earned,” and the scene “was kind of meh and a non-story…” He said, “Sometimes the arc is built in and you’re extending it a little too far.”
The episode’s fatal face-off also lands because it closes the loop on the rivalry between Cashman and Blake, with BB Urich and Kingpin, also known as Mayor Wilson Fisk, part of the same orbit of pressure and betrayal. Arty Froushan, who plays Cashman, said of the character’s break with Fisk, “Buck had to face up to Fisk, but he doesn’t admit it,” and added of the killing, “I killed him,” underscoring how direct the turn became once the edit was changed.
Scardapane said the final beat had to be the last moment because “everything afterwards seemed kind of like a weird, lame coda that didn’t pay off.” He added, “wait a second. He and Buck, in their twisted friendship, both had to be true to who they were.” In his account, the post-production rewrite gave the episode a sharper ending than the filmed version ever did. That is now the version viewers see, and it answers the question the episode raises: Blake does not survive this round with Fisk’s people, and the show chose finality over a delayed escape.
