Brooks Rosser got a surprise on Monday’s Disney night episode of American Idol when former competitor Rae Boyd jogged onstage and hugged him after Ryan Seacrest asked whether he had connected with anybody on the show.
Seacrest put the question directly to Rosser, saying, “Anything you want to share with us?” Boyd answered by sprinting out and wrapping him in a hug, then declaring, “The princess is here to claim her prince.”
The moment landed after Rosser had sung Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” from 2009’s Hannah Montana: The Movie, and before the night’s eliminations were announced. Rosser survived Monday’s episode, while Kyndal Inskeep and Lucas Leon were sent home.
Boyd had already been eliminated from the competition on April 13, which made the return especially pointed. Monday’s show also featured Jennifer Hudson as a guest judge, and her multiple shoe tosses were treated as a sign she was impressed with the performances.
That mattered because Disney night is the season’s traditional showcase episode, and the judges were not handing out praise lightly. Luke Bryan said Rosser’s song got away from him at times, even as the show leaned into the kind of live-TV moment American Idol still trades on: a contestant, a crowd, and a surprise that turned a performance into a headline.
Hudson had once been on the other side of the table herself, singing “Circle of Life” as an Idol contestant in 2004. On Monday, though, the story belonged to Rosser and Boyd, and the answer to Seacrest’s question was plain enough: yes, he had connected with somebody on the show, and the show made sure everyone saw it.
