FC Midtjylland midfielder Alamara Djabi is now stable after undergoing surgery for life-threatening injuries sustained in a stabbing in Herning, central Denmark, over the weekend. The 19-year-old has awakened from an induced coma, the club said Tuesday.
Midtjylland said Djabi had two surgeries after the attack and was first placed in critical condition before his condition improved. The club added that it would not comment further while police investigate the case and is supporting Djabi and his family.
The stabbing has drawn attention because Djabi had already made two first-team appearances for Midtjylland this season, one in Denmark’s Superliga and one in the Europa League play-off. He came through Benfica’s youth academy, joined Midtjylland’s youth team in 2023 and spent last season on loan at Portuguese second division side Mafra.
Central and West Jutland Police said it is looking for a 20-year-old man in connection with the stabbing and that no arrest has been made. Susanne Kiel Nielsen said officers first tried to detain the suspect on Monday night but failed, then released his name and picture in hopes the public could help track him down. Police said the motive remains unclear, though their immediate assumption is that there was a disagreement between Djabi and the suspected perpetrator during a night out.
Midtjylland’s statement lands at a sensitive moment for a club that is second in Denmark’s top flight, four points behind leaders AGF, and has also been eliminated from the Europa League last-16 after a penalty shootout loss to Nottingham Forest. For Djabi, the immediate question is no longer whether he will recover from the attack, but how quickly he can return to a career that was only just beginning to take shape.
