will send Avengers: Endgame back to theaters on Sept. 25 with previously unreleased footage, and says the added scenes are meant to do more than just give fans another look at ’s biggest finale. He said the re-release will include material tied to the Doomsday story and will serve as a bridge to Avengers: Doomsday, due in December.

Russo called the re-release “a critical companion story” and “a setup for what you’re gonna watch in December when you see Avengers Doomsday,” framing the return of avengers endgame as part of a larger plan rather than a nostalgia play. The movie originally wrapped up Marvel’s Phase Three and went on to gross more than $2.799 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films ever.

The timing matters because Marvel is not simply bringing back a blockbuster for one more run. It is using Endgame, the film that closed one era, to tee up the next one in theaters before audiences see the new chapter in December. Russo said that was only possible after he and reconnected with and locked a story structure that allowed to return as Dr. Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

Downey’s casting turns one of Marvel’s most familiar heroes into the villain at the center of the next ensemble. Russo said the decision grew out of a long conversation between Marvel, and Downey, and that the actor had been thinking about it for about two years, maybe 2.5 years. He recalled a dinner in New York when Downey described the idea of playing “the ultimate villain,” a concept Russo said he found clever because Downey had already played “the ultimate hero.”

That twist is where the re-release’s real purpose comes into focus. Instead of treating Endgame as a finished chapter, Marvel is extending its life so the movie helps launch the next one, with Russo saying serialized storytelling is the goal. The strategy makes Endgame both an event and a handoff: a blockbuster that ended Phase Three, crossed $2.799 billion, and is now being used to point audiences toward Avengers: Doomsday.
