PHILADELPHIA beat Pittsburgh 3-2 on Saturday at PPG Paints Arena to take Game 1 of their best-of-seven first-round series, a fast and physical return to the Stanley Cup playoffs for the Flyers after missing the tournament since 2020. The Penguins, back in the postseason for the first time since 2022, were held to 17 shots as the Flyers turned the opener into a grinding road win.
Jamie Drysdale put Philadelphia ahead in the second period, Evgeni Malkin answered late in the frame, and Travis Sanheim broke a 1-1 tie midway through the third. Porter Martone added his first career postseason goal late in the period, and Bryan Rust cut the lead to one with 1:01 left, but the Flyers held on from there.
The game never looked like a free-flowing night for Pittsburgh. Philadelphia opened with 17 hits in the first period alone, a tone that matched the heavy playoff style the Flyers had been carrying for the past month as they pushed for a berth. Sanheim said after the game that he understands the level required in the playoffs, and the challenge ahead is to play top opponents hard, limit their time and space, and keep doing the job that got the Flyers this far.
That was the difference Saturday: one team looked ready for the grind, and the other looked surprised by it. Pittsburgh entered the series with the NHL’s third-ranked offense in the regular season, but it found little room to operate against a Flyers defensive effort that looked more like a clinic than a first-night road upset. Erik Karlsson said the Penguins were simply not good enough, adding that Philadelphia was better and that Pittsburgh did not deserve to win.
The series now shifts quickly to Game 2 on Monday night, with the Penguins facing an early test of whether they can create more space and shots against a Flyers team that has already shown it is willing to make every shift uncomfortable.
