Anna Maxwell Martin will play Sarah Nelson in Heartstopper Forever, replacing Olivia Colman in the final chapter of the Netflix franchise. Derek Jacobi is also joining the film in a newly announced cameo role, while Kit Connor and Joe Locke are stepping in as executive producers for the first time.
The casting shift matters because Sarah is not an extra in this story. Alice Oseman said Nick’s mum needed to be part of the final chapter and that it would have felt nonsensical to leave her out as Nick deals with major emotional struggles. She said Martin captures Sarah’s gentle, down-to-earth energy and said it was magical to watch her scenes with Connor during the shoot.
Heartstopper Forever adapts the forthcoming sixth volume of Oseman’s graphic novel series and the 2015 novella Nick and Charlie, with the film set to arrive after Volume 6 is published on July 2, 2026. Oseman confirmed in late March that post-production had wrapped, saying all creative work was finished apart from quality checks and dubbing in other languages.
The recast closes a gap that had already opened in the franchise. Colman played Sarah in Season 1 and Season 2, but she was notably absent from Season 3, leaving the final screen version of Nick’s mother in other hands as the story heads toward its end. Netflix had not locked in an exact release date at the time of the announcement, but Oseman has made clear the film will premiere after the final graphic novel lands.
That leaves Heartstopper Forever with a simple task and a hard one: finish the story in a way that feels true to the characters who made it matter. With Connor and Locke now producing as well as performing, and with Sarah back in the frame, the final chapter is being built to answer the one question fans would have noticed immediately if it had been left open — who would stand beside Nick when the story needs his family most?
