Pauls Valley Public Schools went into lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a shooting in the lobby of Pauls Valley High School left principal Kirk Moore injured and sent law enforcement racing to the campus. The Garvin County Sheriff's Office said Moore was the only person hurt, and he was listed in stable condition.
No children were injured, and officials said all students were accounted for. The shooter was detained, and authorities said there was no ongoing threat after officers secured the scene. A large law enforcement response closed roads in the area as police and deputies moved to control the campus.
An Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter left the scene at about 3 p.m. with the injured person and landed at OU Health in Oklahoma City about 30 minutes later. Parents were told to pick up their children from school, and the district set up a reunification center at the gym so families could be brought back together.
The response shut down the rest of the school day. Buses were held, and all after-school programs were canceled as Pauls Valley Public Schools managed the aftermath of the shooting and kept the campus locked down while parents collected their children.
The central fact is that the danger passed quickly, but the school day did not return to normal. Moore remained the only victim, the suspect was already in custody, and the district's next task was not investigation on the campus but getting hundreds of families through reunification without adding confusion to a scene already marked by a shooting in the school lobby.
