The modern-day Guardians of the Galaxy did not exist until 2008, when Star-Lord formed the team in Annihilation: Conquest and set in motion the version of the group most readers know today. He brought Rocket Raccoon and Groot onto the roster after getting them released from prison, then intended to send them on a suicide mission; instead, they survived and became part of the team.
That origin matters because the Guardians were already old in Marvel Comics terms, but the lineup that later became familiar to moviegoers was built in pieces. Rocket had first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #271 in 1982 as a master marksman, tactician and combatant with no powers, while Groot was imprisoned with him when Annihilation: Conquest began. Gamora, who debuted in Strange Tales #180 in 1975, came into the story as an antagonist to Star-Lord before realizing she was being used by the Phalanx and joining Nova and other heroes to save the universe.
Once the war ended, Gamora agreed to join the Guardians, adding her enhanced strength, agility and martial skill to a team already shaped by Quill’s military instincts. Peter Quill himself was a capable tactician who briefly became the Master of the Sun before losing those powers after the destruction of the Element Gun; he also has advanced longevity through his Human/Spartax physiology and later regrew an eye he had lost. Mantis, meanwhile, used her telepathy and limited precognitive abilities to tamper with everyone’s minds and make the group get along with each other.
There is one detail that cuts against any clean origin story: the first version of the Guardians included all five of the MCU’s original members along with some other additions, but Nova was not part of that original team. Star-Lord and Nova worked together in the formation era, yet the lineup that launched in 2008 was assembled around Quill and the heroes he could pull out of prison, warp into trust and keep alive long enough to matter. That is how the guardians of the galaxy became a team at all.
The answer, then, is simple: the Guardians of the Galaxy people know today were not a 1970s creation in their modern form, but a 2008 team built from surviving enemies, prison breakouts and uneasy alliances. The name was older than the roster, and the roster was older than the fame.
