Karol G says she wants to speak more openly about politics in the United States, including ICE actions, but she is weighing how far to go. In an interview published alongside her new Playboy cover story, the Colombian star said people routinely tell her it is better not to speak out.

“People will say, ‘It’s better you don’t,’” she said, adding that some warn her that if she says the wrong thing, “maybe the next day you’ll get a call: ‘Hey, we are taking your visa away.’ You become bait, because some people want to show their power.”

That fear is not abstract for Karol G. She said she has a huge stage and wants to use it carefully, with the goal of doing more than simply saying “ICE Out.” “What impact does it really have to say ‘ICE Out’ versus something else that can have a real impact on my community?” she asked. Even so, she said, “But I’m willing to say it,” while also acknowledging, “If I’m being honest with you, it’s something that crosses the line of what I have to do to protect myself.”

She said the calculation is partly about timing and reach. “I have a huge stage, and that’s why I want to wait, and if someone was ever to do something to me, I want to stand firmly on my stage for my community,” she said. “So that’s why I may have to be more careful, and wait for my turn, and ensure that, through that opportunity, I can talk and represent something more.”

The comments land as Karol G prepares for two high-profile moments this year. Playboy said its spring issue will hit newsstands April 14, and she will also become the first Latina to headline Coachella at this year’s festival. The Playboy cover is the first under new chief brand officer and editor-in-chief Phillip Picardi, who took the role in March 2026.

Karol G said she wanted to pose for Playboy because she grew up inspired by how beautiful the women in the magazine looked. She said she asked fellow Colombian Sofía Vergara whether she should do it, and Vergara pushed her to have a reason for the cover. “Mijita, with that body? When you get to this age, you tell yourself, ‘Fuck, why didn’t I pose that one time? I should have posed more with a thong!’” Vergara told her, according to Karol G. “Just one thing: Don’t show your pussy,” she added.

For Karol G, the message is now split between visibility and restraint. She is willing to speak, even about a politically charged issue that could affect her visa, but she is also looking for the moment when her words can carry more than a slogan. That is the answer in her own comments: she does not want to shout first if a later stage can make the point harder to ignore.
