The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has gone into effect, and political commentator Abed Abou Shhadeh is calling it “extremely problematic,” not only for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but for the Israeli public as well.
Abou Shhadeh said the deal lands after two and a half years in which Israelis were promised “absolute victory,” a promise he said now hangs over the agreement in plain view. His criticism puts the ceasefire at the center of a political argument over whether the moment represents relief or a retreat from the expectations built around the war.
The timing matters because the truce is no longer a future possibility or a negotiating goal. It is now in force, and that changes the pressure on Netanyahu immediately, while also exposing the gap between years of public messaging and the outcome now taking hold.
That gap is where the real friction sits. A ceasefire can end fighting on paper while leaving the political damage untouched, and Abou Shhadeh’s remarks suggest this one may do exactly that: calm the border for the moment while sharpening the debate inside Israel over what victory was supposed to look like and who has to answer for the difference.
