Jane Carter Schneck has launched a GoFundMe to pay for a Hollywood Walk of Fame star honoring Aaron Carter, the singer and actor who died at 34 in November 2022. As of Thursday, April 16, the fundraiser had raised $331 toward an $85,000 goal.
Schneck said the money will cover the creation, installation and long-term maintenance of the star. She called Carter a singer, rapper, actor and entertainer who rose to international fame, and described him as one of the most recognizable teen pop stars of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Carter released his self-titled debut album in 1997 at age 9 and went on to score chart-topping singles including I Want Candy and That’s How I Beat Shaq. He later released Oh Aaron and Another Earthquake!, toured internationally, performed alongside the Backstreet Boys and finished in the top five on Dancing With the Stars.
The campaign comes as the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce began accepting 2027 nominations on April 1, with the deadline for this year’s admissions set for May 15. The Walk of Fame website says posthumous awards require a two-year waiting period after death, one posthumous award may be given each year and a family member must accept the honor.
That timing matters because Carter’s death was ruled an accident after he was found unresponsive in his California home and later pronounced dead. A coroner’s report said he drowned in a bathtub due to the effects of difluoroethane and alprazolam.
Schneck said the fundraiser is meant to honor his impact on young fans and his place in pop music. “Every donation, no matter the size, brings us one step closer,” she wrote, adding, “Let’s come together to celebrate Aaron’s life, his music, and the lasting mark he left on so many hearts.”
Carter is survived by his mother, his older brother Nick Carter, his twin sister Angel Carter and his 4-year-old son Prince. Whether the family can turn a small fundraiser into a successful nomination now depends on whether the Walk of Fame’s posthumous rules and the chamber’s selection process line up in time for a 2027 award.
