Boban Delčev said on April 6 that he had begun a hunger and thirst strike in front of the City Administration in Pirot after receiving a dismissal and leaving the apartment where he had been living on rent. The 53-year-old said he would also no longer take medicine.
Delčev, who was born in Pirot in 1973, had already warned that if people did not understand him and try to find him a job, he would begin a hunger and thirst strike on Monday, April 6. He said three to four days passed between that earlier warning and the report of his protest.
The case has turned on his effort to be heard by the local authorities. The report says he had been trying to speak with the City Administration and the Center for Social Work about finding him a job, while describing him as unemployed and homeless.

That answer leaves the dispute where it started: Delčev says he is out of options and has put his health on the line, while the response he has received so far is procedural, not immediate. His next move now depends on whether a written request is enough to break a standoff that has already pushed him into protest.
